Notes for WILLIAM BELFORD:
The Belfords of Pope Co. IL probably came to America in the late 1700's from Europe then found their way to North Carolina.

William came to Illinois where he was active in the beginnings of Pope County. He first recorded a deed for land in 1818, just north of Golconda. He later recorded deeds for land surrounding his original property. Some of those deeds were purchased with "land warrants." At this time, no research has been successful in discovering a source for those land warrants.

NOT SURE IF BENJAMIN BELFORD b. May 18, 1789 in Kentucky IS THE BROTHER OF WILLIAM.
They both came to Pope Co. IL along with John Belford d. December 11, 1845 about the same time. John was married to Kiziah (Storm) Norrington, whom he married March 6, 1823

He was, at times, supervisor to road building projects in the wilderness area of the county and served as a Justice of the Peace for many years. His name is recorded on countless documents on file in the county records. He also served as a caretaker for the poor in Golconda Precinct in his later years.

He must have been a kind person because the census records often show children living in his household that were not his own. Some were his grandchildren, while others were not even related.

He was one of the early, rugged individuals that are known as pioneers.

His wife Elizabeth may have been the loving and caring one in the family because it was she who cared for those children listed in the early census records. There is no other information to determine who her parents may have been. She died sometime between 1870-1880; probably before 1872.

They had one child, Benjamin who needed constant care because of his mental condition. He had to be cared for during his entire life. His father made provisions in his will for Benjamin's continued care after his passing.

July 8, 1816, a brand and Ear marks for livestock was registered in Pope County, IL. A crop of the left ear and a half crop of the under side of the right ear. Brand "WB"

The William Belford Cemetery (also called Vaughn) is located on route 146 north of Golconda, across from what is commonly called the Bushwhack road, on the east side of the highway. The exact location is ; one acre in the southwest corner of the northwest quarter of the southwest quarter of section 6 in T13SR7E.

Notes for BENJAMIN BELFORD:
Benjamin was not a normal child. The 1850 census mercilessly lists him as an "idiot," which was a common term in those days used to describe a person who had any type of mental deficiency. Benjamin never married and he had to be cared for all of his life. In later years, he lived with his sister, Elizabeth Hazel, a widow. Census records shows that he live with her in 1860 and 1870. His mother died a few years before his father. His father had made provision in his will for the care of Benjamin as long as he lived.

4. WILLIAM3 BELFORD (BENJAMIN2, UNKNOWN1) was born December 20, 1822 in Prob. Pope County, Illinois, and died September 09, 1864 in Pope County, Illinois. He married MARY BROWN August 31, 1848 in Pope County, Illinois2, daughter of WILLIAM BROWN and GRISSIE COWSERT. She was born May 25, 1828, and died April 29, 1905 in Union County, Illinois3.

Notes for WILLIAM BELFORD:
In 1864, it is believed that James, Dora, Mary Etta, Emma, and William were the only children living.

William (aka Long Bill), died at the Early age of 42 on September 9, 1864, when he died from a gun-shot wound during an altercation. William was a southern sympathizer during the Civil War and an active member of the Knights of the Golden Circle, a pro south organization. It has also been reported that he may have made his fortune hunting down and returning fugitive slaves. He was not too well liked in the community and known as a "mean man."

According to records, he left his family well cared for after his death. Mary continued to care for the family until her death.

Both William and Mary and also some of the children are buried in Belford Cemetery, on River Road, north of Golconda, Pope County, IL.

Notes for MILOW BELFORD:
There is an unknown Milo Belford born about 1857, parents unknown. He is listed in the mortality schedule of the 1860 census as being two years old. He died of "phthistic" from which he had suffered for ten days. He is listed as living in T13SR7E, Pope Co. IL. Belfords living in that area are: Gordon, Isaac and William. Gordon had a three year old, Isaac and William each had a two year old listed in the census at the time.

Allowing for the way the census was taken, it could be assumed that the Milow, son of William is the one identified here. Since, Milow died very close to the end of the year in 1858, he could have been noted as dying in 1959 which is the year the mortality schedule covered. Milow was a little more that 3 years old at his death, this Milo was listed as being two years old. It still remains the identity of Milo Belford b. abt. 1857 is uncertain.

A careful study of his hearing, in volume two of this book, " Belford Descendants of Pope County Illinois, 1800-1900, " will indicate that John possibly suffered from what is now known as Alzheimer's Disease. He had become violent, trying to strike members of his family with chains before being committed. Shortly after he was admitted, on Sep. 10, 1893, John died. There is no marker on his grave.

Notes for NANCY MARY WILLIAMS:
In the book "Belford Descendants of Pope County Illinois, 1800-1900" by Edward L. Annable states that, Nancy Mary Williams died about 1855. This date is before their marriage date, which is, 1862.
(Something not right. May be death date or marriage date is wrong.)

Tragedy struck the young family when the mother died about 1855, during her early 20's. It is not known where her grave is located but is assumed to be at the Thompson Cemetery, Pope County, IL.

Notes for EDITH MODGLIN:
Edith became a Christian in 1895, the year aftr Samuel's death. She remained true to her conversion and was a very loving and helpful neighbor until her death.

Obituary from an unknown source
Edith Modglin was born in Pope Co. IL, Oct. 17, 1840. She died in the same county within three miles of her birthplace April 24, 1916, age 75 years, 5 minths, and 27 days. At the age of 16 she was married to Samuel L. Belford of this county. To this union were born eight children; Mary Storm, Katheryn Corbit, Benny Cosby, Amby Foreman, and Milo, Kate, Charles and Otto Belford, all of whom are living except Milo and Charles. She also had two step children, J.W. Belford and Louisa Duncan, the former of whom survives her. Twenty two grandchildren and 16 Great grand children also survive her. Her husband died January 5, 1894 leaving her a widow for 22 years.

She professed faith in Christ in her home in 1895 was baptized and became a member of the United Baptist Church. Since then her life has been one of righteousness and devotion. And she believed in a religion that remained the same seven days in the week. She loved her neighbors and her greatest happiness was in making others happy. There was not a child in her part of the county but knew and loved "Aunt" Eadie.

She suffered for several years with asthma and other complaints but bore all patiently and was always ready to joke or speak a cheery word. When the summons came to that mysterious shore, she was ready and willing to go. Her little corner of the world has truly been better for her having lived in it and she has now inherited a Crown of Life.

Notes for JAMES J. BELFORD:
1900 Pope County, Illinois census states that this family had 6 children, but 5 are living at this time.

James ran as a Democratic candidate for County Commissioner in 1890. He won the election and served in that office.

Taken from the Golconda Herald Tribune, July 1890
County Commissioner
Jas. J. Belford, the nominee for County Commissioner, is as good a Democrat as there is in the county. He is the tallest man in the county except for Samp Vickers, and his legs are three inches longer than Samp's. He was selected by Matt Layman a few years ago to run against Esq. Cheney on the Iron Fence issue, on the grounds that he was the only man in the county that had legs long enough to straddle the Iron Fence question without getting hurt. He is an industrious farmer, and has taught school a good many terms. He is as firmly grounded in the Democratic faith as Bill Green, Josh Allen or "Uncle" Lige Jennings. He will make a magnificent Captain for the Salt River boat in November.

Hello Home Folks, How is everybody up there? I am well and have to like down here, but it is awful hot, but they're talking of leaving this camp for Hoboken, N.J. Don't know how soon. Hope you are getting rain for the crops, for this is a hot, sandy, dry place. Hope the Red Cross is still in action. All the boys are well and seem to be getting on with their training. Is "Bismark" still selling ice? Would like to see you all and would like to have one of T.J. Abbott's mince meat pies. Guess we will get a chance at Kaiser Bill--if so, we will give him a little of what we are training for. The 113th is one among the best trained companies there is. There are some of the boys I haven't seen since we came down here, and I don't know where they are. I saw that boy they call "Green Tree" on guard the other day. They will have to give it to the Pope County boys down here, for they haven't started anything but what the Pope County boys have come over the top on. Will close, hoping to hear from Golconda and the H.-E. soon.

Notes for JAMES ROY WASSON:
One Horse Gap in Pope County, Illinois is named because this passage way is only wide enough for one horse to go through it. Lillie, James' wife recalls a time when James accomplished the improbable task in the summer of 1916. It was a fine July day, she remembers, when Roy hitched up the horse to the buggy and headed off for a visit to his dad's place some distance away. The elder Wasson had house guests. Roy's brother David and his family, at the time of Roy's arrival. Roy persuaded David and family to accompany him back home so that their tow families could have a visit. The old country road between Roy and David's father's farm and Roy's place would past Concord and Dutton's Chapel and the travel mighty slow with a buggy full of three adults and several children. They determined to take the Gap short cut. When they arrived at the top, the horse was unhitched and led through the passage. Then the buggy was lowered down the face of the bluff with ropes. With it safely down, they once again hitched up, and the family boarded the wagon and they went on their way, several miles and a couple hours ahead of schedule.

Letter home from Freeman Belford
Philippine Islands
April 8, 1945

Dear Father,
Will try to write you a few lines to let you know I am all right. How does this find you? This leaves me as good as ever. Excuse me for not writing sooner. I have been pretty busy, have been up on the front lines for the last fifty two days, up in the mountains. Just came down yesterday for a 10 day rest. It sure is cold up in the mountains, but I like it better up there than in the valley.

How does this find everybody around home? Well, I hope. Tell them all "hello" for me.

Have received letter from Eval lately but have not heard from the other girls for sometime. I don't hear from James very often.

Don't know much to write, will hush for this time. Take good care of yourself.
With all my love, your son, Freeman.
